2014: A Year of Supernatural Release

0-supernatural%20releaseV2_ENGLISHGod’s Word to us for 2014 – this will be  a year of supernatural release. This promise is for all members, families and friends of Grace Church. So if you’re reading this you can mix your faith with God’s word and reap the sure benefits.

I believe that in 2014 God will come on us with supernatural power and bring release to these six areas of our personal & corporate lives that emerge from the book of Malachi:

  • True Worship
  • Ministry & Mission of Miracles
  • Marriage & Relationships
  • Personal holiness
  • Finances
  • Fathers

Over the next few months I will work through the book of Malachi as we look at these six areas of supernatural release that the Lord wants to bring to us.

We ended 2013 with a wonderful celebration. Even though more than half of our people couldn’t come, God’s word of His favour for 2013 stood out in the many testimonies. Here’s praying that as we mix faith with what God has said to us for 2014 we’ll experience some fantastic breakthroughs.

The preaching outline is now available here and in the adjacent BOX widget as a free download. It is a pdf file that requires Adobe Reader. You can get the free Reader here.

fed by the word

In 2013 I completed the Chronological Bible Reading Plan, reading read-through-the-bible-2014the whole Bible according to its chronology. The Bible is the only book ever that can change lives for it is the only book that is ‘alive and powerful’ (Heb 4:12). Because behind every word stands the omnipotence of God Almighty who says that He is ‘watching over my word to perform it’ (Jer 1:12). This word has given me life and sustained me through 2013. Additionally because it is a living book God has spoken to me through it on 3 very notable times this year. There have been innumerable others times but these 3 stand out.

2014 Plans
With this in mind and as stated in our ‘mission: writeword‘  in 2014 I will be working through the New Testament in greater detail in my regular ‘morning’ bible reading. The plan is to read the set portion of the Bible for the day and the corresponding portion in the Holman Concise Commentary in my Logos Bible Software program, write a short devotional or article on a verse from that portion, a prayer for the church and perhaps include a quote from the commentary and/or the A W Tozer devotional, ‘My Daily Pursuit’ that I hope to follow. I doubt I’d be able to write everyday so my goal is to do this at least 3 or 4 times each week in the hope that this discipline will drill the word into my heart deeper than before. All of those writings will be then posted on the blog here. I find for me the discipline of writing helps clarify my thoughts and brings God’s inspiration to me besides ensuring that I remember what I have read.

In the evenings I hope to introduce a new discipline for myself – to read through the entire bible in a new translation. In 2014 I’m going to start with the ‘New Living Translation’. My hope is that this dual discipline of study and reading will bring fresh light into my soul for after all God’s word is a ‘lamp for my feet’ (Psa 119:105).

What are your plans?
Have you planned to read the Bible in 2014? Remember ‘if you fail to plan, you will plan to fail’. To help you decide I am sharing here a link to a post by Justin Taylor over at the Gospel Coalition that is one of the most comprehensive posts I’ve seen on this subject. Like Justin the ESV is my preferred version but if you googled around you’d get help for other versions. The ideas & suggestions that Justin shares are ever so helpful to ensure we have a healthy diet of the most important food we can ever eat. Click through here to find a plan that is suitable for you.

Be blessed in 2014 as you read the word of God. There’s just no other book like it!

Future Shock

In the best seller ‘Future Shock’ author Alvin Toffler, “argued that society is undergoing an enormous structural change, a revolution from an industrial society to a super-industrial society. This change overwhelms people. He believed the accelerated rate of technological and social change left people disconnected and suffering from “shattering stress and disorientation”—future shocked. Toffler stated that the majority of social problems are symptoms of future shock.” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Future_Shock)

As I read about the many struggles we are going through in our nation and the many social problems we face I wonder if it is because of this disorientation of rapid change. Or is there another more fundamental reason? I read with alarm the public outcry against the recent overturning of judgements that have re-criminalised homosexual relationships. I am troubled that this is lumped with a number of other offensive social troubles. And I am searching for a moral reaponse that condemns the wrong but accepts the wrong-doer as a person created (however broken) in the image of God.

The real future shock is in what the bible tells us the future will really bring, the return of the Lord Jesus Christ to judge the living and the dead. Today as I finish the year’s full bible reading plan with the final chapters of Revelation I am personally even more convinced that the only hope for morality and righteousness for individuals and consequently natuons is found in Jesus Christ alone. A nation which veers away from the biblical basis for life so brilliantly demonstrated by the Lord Himself when He condoned the sin but forgave the sinner and accepted him as gospel story after story illustrates is not well prepared for the real future shock. The real future shock is going to be at the return of the Lord. And the only way we can prepare for that is to live with this promise of the Lord Himself when He said:

“Look, I am coming soon, bringing my reward with me to repay all people according to their deeds. Revelation 22:12 (NLTse)

What rewards will he bring me? Us? My family? My nation? Perhaps the best thing I can do in 2014 is to pray for all of the above that we will be better prepared so that instead of future shock, the coming of the Lord will be a future joy!

Christmas Celebration

Christmas Celebration

Clockwise from top left. Family pic at home, part of the hall at the Grace Church packed out Christmas Celebration, kids wait for lunch, Divya with the super kids from Good Shepherd Home who presented a super dance and skit, Manju & Divya with the youth girls who danced.

A personal highlight was a unique opportunity in the evening to share the Christmas Story to an unusual group of qualified and able people.

Sharing the Story

After a packed out Christmas morning at the church meeting and a somewhat hurried family lunch I spent an hour thinking about a unique Christmas Evening opportunity we had to share the Christmas Story in a setting I’d never done before. I felt out of my depth, nervous and wondered how it would be to share this wonderful story amongst these qualified and able group of people.

The Lord was with us and kind to us as we sang some carols and then I shared very briefly about Dr. Luke, the times he lived in, the reason he wrote his gospel account and then literally read parts of the first two chapters. At the end we were warmly received, the gathered group accepted my suggestion to pray for them and a couple of rich conversations ensued including a possible invite to our church meeting. It was a wonderfully different Christmas and I thank the Lord for it.

Here’s praying for more opportunities to share this story that has changed our life’s story. God’s love story as magnificently demonstrated through Jesus.

Christmas Eve Joy

ChristmasEve JoyIt was an incredible moment to travel back down memory lane when I met Mrs. Deepa Bunyan (extra right in the main picture) who was a Biology teacher in Cottons when I was a student there in the late 70s & early 80s. That providential encounter was possible thanks to our friends Moshe & Jiji who are here in Nashik and worshipping with Grace Church. They are also in this selfie with his Mum besides our Manju & Divya.

This joy was followed (in clockwise order) by our traditional cooked Christmas-eve mega brunch and then devoting a few hours in to help get the meeting hall for tomorrow. Christmas joy is here!

22 Productivity Principles from the Book of Proverbs

This is a repost of the superb 22 productivity principles from http://www.pastoralized.com.

The Book of Proverbs has a lot to say about productivity. Not only does it teach us how we can be more productive, it teaches how we can be more biblically productive.

Some of these principles you can find in secular productivity literature today. (Indeed, many of the proverbs can be found in secular ancient Near East literature, verbatim.) But seeing them in God-breathed Scripture reminds us to adopt those principles with a God-centered perspective. Other principles in the list don’t get as much ink or pixels in productivity books or blogs. Let us consider how to incorporate those in our mindset and our workflow, so that we can glorify God all the more in the work that we do.

22 Productivity Principles from Proverbs

1. Productivity is a result of intrinsic motivation and self-direction. “Tools” won’t turn you into a productivity guru.

Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest. (Prov. 6:6-8)

2. Resist the temptation to continually chase new ideas. Focus on the responsibilities youhave been called to do. Put the gifts and talents you have been given to work.

Whoever works his land will have plenty of bread, but he who follows worthless pursuits lacks sense. (Prov. 12:11)

3. Being responsible and diligent will probably lead you to opportunities for greater influence and leadership.

The hand of the diligent will rule, while the slothful will be put to forced labor. (Prov. 12:24)

Do you see a man skillful in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men. (Prov. 22:29)

4. Productivity is messy. Don’t confuse being organized with being productive.

Where there are no oxen, the manger is clean, but abundant crops come by the strength of the ox. (Prov. 14:4)

5. But when everything is a mess all the time, that is a sign that you are not being productive.

I passed by the field of a sluggard, by the vineyard of a man lacking sense, and behold, it was all overgrown with thorns; the ground was covered with nettles, and its stone wall was broken down. Then I saw and considered it; I looked and received instruction. (Prov. 24:30-32)

6. In productivity – as in all things – talk is cheap. Don’t tell me your life mission statement, tell me the one step you took yesterday toward your most important goal or project.

In all toil there is profit, but mere talk tends only to poverty. (Prov. 14:23)

7. Laziness not only leads to less productivity, it creates obstacles for productivity. On the other hand, the more productive you are, the easier being productive becomes.

The way of a sluggard is like a hedge of thorns, but the path of the upright is a level highway. (Prov. 15:19)

8. Productive people are not know-it-all’s. They understand they will get better results if they get other people’s advice

Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed. (Prov. 15:22)

9. Planning is important. Planning shouldn’t be avoided on account of God’s sovereignty, nor should you elevate planning as if we can direct our destinies.

The plans of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the LORD. (Prov. 16:1)

Commit your work to the LORD, and your plans will be established. (Prov. 16:3)

Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand. (Prov. 19:21)

10. Thoughtful progress over the long haul is better than quick bursts of effort that lack direction.

The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty. (Prov. 21:5)

11. Laziness is not neutral; ultimately it is destructive. It wastes time, money, and other valuable resources.

Whoever is slack in his work is a brother to him who destroys. (Prov. 18:9)

12. The love of sleep is the root of all unproductivity.

Love not sleep, lest you come to poverty; open your eyes, and you will have plenty of bread. (Prov. 20:13)

13. An unproductive person reaches the height of his creativity while making excuses.

The sluggard says, “There is a lion outside! I shall be killed in the streets!” (Prov. 22:13)

14. A productive person finishes what he starts. The lazy person can’t complete the smallest of tasks.

The sluggard buries his hand in the dish; it wears him out to bring it back to his mouth. (Prov. 26:15)

15. The productive person knows that certain seasons call for certain kinds of work.

The sluggard does not plow in the autumn; he will seek at harvest and have nothing. (Prov. 20:4)

16. Productivity doesn’t mean everything always goes smoothly. It means you plow through the tough days to get something done.

If you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small. (Prov. 24:10)

17. Being productive is not just about knowing what to do, but knowing the order and priority of what should be done.

Prepare your work outside; get everything ready for yourself in the field, and after that build your house. (Prov. 24:27)

18. The vastness of your plans and aspirations are not the mark of your productivity. It is about what you actually accomplish.

Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring. (Prov. 27:1)

19. Though perhaps not in the short term, in the long term it is more productive to prevent the disaster that you see coming in the future.

The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it. (Prov. 27:12)

20. Don’t be ostentatious with your productivity habits. You’ll annoy everyone around you!

Whoever blesses his neighbor with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, will be counted as cursing. (Prov. 27:14)

21. Mundane chores and maintenance activities are an important part of being productive.

Whoever tends a fig tree will eat its fruit, and he who guards his master will be honored. (Prov. 27:18)

22. It is possible to be productive without looking like a productivity guru. Probably the most productive people are those who don’t need tools, apps, etc. Don’t try to lookproductive. Just get your work done!

Four things on earth are small, but they are exceedingly wise: the ants are a people not strong, yet they provide their food in the summer; the rock badgers are a people not mighty, yet they make their homes in the cliffs; the locusts have no king, yet all of them march in rank; the lizard you can take in your hands, yet it is in kings’ palaces. (Prov. 30:24-26)

Strong Encouragement

For these Christ followers who were suffering for their faith in Christ and wondering if they should return to Judaism to alleviate the pain of their predicament the pastor writing the letter we call Hebrews reminds them of the supremacy of Jesus Christ and how in him we can have the ultimate rest. This is a rest that we can have now and will lead to the ultimate rest of being with Him in heaven. But they are struggling to press through the trials here and now and so he urges them to live transparently with the knowledge that God sees everything, ‘nothing is hidden from Him’. And then he writes of the strong encouragement that is available to them – and us – as we press on saying,

18202248_640“Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.  For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:14-16 (ESV)

My struggles and troubles are different from what they faced (10:32-34) and I am so glad. I honestly don’t fancy the idea of having my home ransacked or being thrown into prison. However as with everyone what they are going through in that moment and time is difficult. To them and to me comes this strong encouragement to persevere, to not give up because we have Jesus, the Son of God

  • Our High Priest, representing us to the Father, praying for us and then turning around and representing and mediating the Father’s provision to us
  • Understanding our struggle and sympathising with us. He has been through worse, He has been through every struggle I will ever go through, He has been tempted and tested in every way that I am and so He is sympathetic toward me
  • Stands interceding for us because he is not powerless and can help us receive mercy and find grace. It may require some effort on my part of finding, focusing and receiving but even that I can do by the power of the Holy Spirit who lives in me.

In these last two weeks of a year soon to be wrapped up and rolled away I come to this river of life to receive fresh strength. The year that is about to end signifies another chapter about to end. There are, God willing, more chapters to be written. The confidence of facing and entering into those chapters of life must lie in the strong encouragement here. I need it and I receive the mercy and grace that is freely available singing with the song writer,

“There is none like You.
No one else can touch my heart like You do,
I can search for all eternity Lord
And find, there is none like You.

Your mercy flows like a river wide,
And healing comes from Your hand.
Suffering children are safe in Your arms,
There is none like You. ”

wishing you a wonderful christmas and new year

podcast-coverWe wish you a very Wonderful Christmas and an Immensely Blessed and Joy Filled New Year.

2013 will go down as the year the Lord worked deeply in our hearts. It was the year of favour that was experienced in unexpected ways.

DivsDivya successfully and with distinction served as the captain of her school house. Planning and arranging a Teacher’s Day Event  was another highlight. All of this amidst the challenge of her final school year whose exams loom large in our collective horizon. She is almost as tall as her Dad, and loves wearing her wedges which make her just that much taller than him. For Dad its a proud moment to have a second lady standing next to him in worship.

Roshan has delighted us with the new found diligence with which he applied himself to his studies and basket balling. He surprised us Ro_Blogwith his determination to wake up early and go almost everyday at 6am for basketball practice. He was a member of his school’s junior team and although he spent more time on the bench his never say die attitude has been a huge surprise. He brought this same diligence to his studies and secured outstanding marks in his second term exams.

DeepsDeepa continues to be the live wire of the family, busy as a bee and chatting non stop. She celebrated her 5th birthday this year and continues to be such a lesson of love for us. For our weak efforts of loving her remind us of the incredible love our Heavenly Father has for each one of us His adopted children.

Manju and I have much to thank God for. I continued being rather Photo(6)busy this year and had to take a much needed break toward the end of the year. Travel, responsibilities and the challenges of life have been tough but by God’s grace and favour we find ourselves at the end of the year with very grateful hearts pausing to reflect on our ‘Immanuel, God with us‘!

As you do the same with family and friends we pray that you will know great joy, peace and favour with God and men. After all that is the purpose of Christmas. That is what He came for.
